Many people do not realize that the word “zoo” is actually short for the term “zoological garden.” A zoo is a place where animals are kept in a restricted, artificial environment, and are exhibited to the public. Most large cities around the world have zoos. In some cities, their zoos are the largest tourist attraction they have to offer. Major zoos can be so important to a city's tourism industry that local governments may subsidize or underwrite the zoo's operating expenses, although most zoo funding comes primarily from private donations and entrance fees. Zoos are significant for their educational value, and are commonly a destination for school field trips.
